The track Vendaval offers a preview of Ismael Pinkler’s forthcoming album Nocturnos, a collection of piano pieces performed by Nicolás Bacal. Ismael Pinkler, a prominent Argentinean producer of electronic music that ranges from dance to experimental, was a member of Carisma (Cómeme) and recently released an introspective album of ambient music titled Geografía Mental, under the Metamúsica label from Argentina.
In the creation of his new project, Nocturnos, Ismael Pinkler delved into piano composition without being a pianist, using digital tools and electronic techniques to generate his pieces. This process led him to explore tonal music more deeply. For Ismael Pinkler, the process of making Nocturnos was an enriching experience where he learned to translate ambient sensations into written musical language, adjusting the compositions to balance their fidelity with ease of interpretation.
In 2021, composer and sound artist Ulises Conti showed a special interest in the piano pieces that Ismael Pinkler was developing. Conti encouraged Pinkler to continue composing and to delve deeper into the piano and tonal music. He recommended that he become more familiar with the instrument and they conducted listening sessions and practical exercises on the piano to improve his understanding of the creative process. Thanks to this collaboration, most of the pieces that make up the album Nocturnos were composed during that period.
The pieces for Nocturnos were performed by Nicolás Bacal, whom the composer met in 2004 at the National University of Quilmes. At the time, Bacal was forming his experimental pop trio Lile and the composer was presenting his first live productions. Over the years, they shared music and collaborated on various projects. The composer also assisted Bacal with the sound of his first works as a visual artist. A conversation about fusing sounds with reverberation and silence influenced the piano pieces. Expanding his project, the composer chose Bacal as the ideal performer. Together they worked for over a year, rehearsing and perfecting the scores with the help of Pablo Butelman.
In the words of Ismael Pinkler, the track Vendaval “takes us to a natural landscape crossed by gusts of wind that shake the calm, dancing grasslands and trees about to fall seen from afar; the moment before a storm, the warning that it is time to return home. The softness and long pauses of the introduction create a framework for the subtle melody in crescendo to feel like a great event.”
The single Vendaval is now available on all streaming platforms.
The album Nocturnos will be available from October 11th.
The recording, made by Norberto Villagra in September 2023, was mixed by Ismael Pinkler, and mastered by Guillermo Guevara (Mexico City) in August 2024. The graphic design for “Vendaval” and “Nocturnos” was created by Alejandro Ros, known for his work with artists such as Juana Molina, Soda Stereo, Gustavo Cerati, Fito Páez and Julieta Venegas, among others.
