Ángel Sánchez Borges, the media artist known as Antiguo Autómata Mexicano (AAM), returns to his adolescent roots: Dadaism and Rock In Opposition movement influences, which inspired him to form the band Oh! Cráneo … (named after a poem by Georges Bataille) in the late 80s.
20+ Piano Improvisations, as the title implies, is an album where AAM integrates unusual ways of playing the piano, including “organic” programming. The result is a Hyper-Muzak of redirected MIDI stochastic, which evoques the ‘Mexican’ pianolas of Conlon Nancarrow and generative music while avoiding the obviousness of atonalism and, at the same time, the glitch-art that characterized AAM’s early work (Metamistake, Microhate and Kraut Slut), displaying ‘experimental’ music based on melodies of diverse chromatic make-up and electronics that aim to reestablish the sense of artistic “contemporaneity”, not as a label or genre, but simply as music made in the present.
